Your first study in ten minutes

Make a new experiment with a welcome page, a chat for pairs and a closing page. Check it, save it, open it and share it. Then two participants take it.

  1. Name the parts

Start from New Experiment (see Find your way around the builder).

    • Click the name of the study and type a new name.
    • Name the chamberline.
    • Name the chamber.
    • Drag two Instruction segments into the chamber: one for the welcome and one for the end.
Harbour discussion, its Discussion chamber, and two pages.
  2. Write the pages

Click an Instruction segment and give it a name. Use Edit content to write its text in Markdown.

An Instruction page has a Continue button. Each participant continues when they click it.

Then drag the welcome page above the chat. The timeline is now Welcome, Discussion, Thanks.

The welcome text and the closing text. The welcome moves to the top.
  3. Add the people

Drag Human Participant into the cast two times. The chamber is for pairs. Thus the first participant waits until a second participant joins.

    Two human slots.
  4. Check it

Validate shows each problem that stops the study. Here the study has no problems.

Playtest is on the chamberline. It goes through the segments in the builder as a test. Carrier records no data, and the chat shows no participants. Use it to read each page as a participant sees it.

Validation passes. A playtest goes through all three segments.
  5. Save and share

Deploy saves the design. The study is still a Draft. A person who opens its link sees that the study is not available yet.

Copy link tells you this and gives the option Activate and copy. This option makes the study Active and copies the link. Participants can then use the link to go in.

To use a recruitment platform, see Recruit participants through Prolific.

The study is deployed and activated, and the participant link is copied.
  6. Two people take it

Each participant sets a display name. The first participant waits on Finding Partners until the second participant comes. Then the two participants read the welcome, continue, and chat.

Before you use real participants, do a pilot in testing mode. Then you can identify the pilot data (see Test, deploy and share a study).

Two participants are matched, read the welcome and chat.
