Standalone and embedded segments

A segment either fills the screen or runs in the chat before it. Learn how to embed a segment, and how the chat knows when to end.

  1. Standalone: a step of its own

By default, a segment is standalone. When the participant gets to it, it replaces the chat on the screen. The next segment comes after it is complete.

Here the vote comes after the discussion, as a separate step.

The Vote segment is standalone: a separate step after the chat.
  2. Embedded: inside the chat before it

Set Display Mode to Embedded. The segment then runs in the chat, and the conversation continues.

The segment belongs to the chat immediately before it in the timeline. The canvas shows it under that chat, with a badge that shows when it starts. One chat can have many segments, in timeline order.

These segment types can be embedded: selection, ranking, input, task, slide, instruction, media, survey, PDF and social. Timers, attention checks, Process and shop segments cannot.

CAUTION: An embedded segment with no chat before it never shows. Validate and activation do not accept it.

Vote becomes embedded, goes under Discuss, and starts 10 seconds after the chat starts.
  3. End the chat when its segments are done

A chat with embedded segments can use the Embedded complete transition. The chat then ends when all its embedded segments are complete, not at a set time.

Also set a fallback timeout. Thus a participant who does not complete a segment does not wait forever.

Discuss ends when its embedded segments are complete, or after 300 seconds.
  4. What the participant sees

At ten seconds, the vote shows as a card in the conversation. The participant answers in the chat. When the card is complete, the chat ends and the study moves on.

Each participant gets their own cards. Other persons in the chat see only the conversation.

A vote card shows in the chat. The participant answers it, and the chat ends.
