Build a study with an AI assistant

Connect an assistant such as Claude to Carrier (preview) and let it build a draft. Then examine the draft in the builder: History, and edits by you and the assistant at the same time. "Connect Claude Code or Codex to Carrier" and "Build a simple study with an assistant" show the setup and an example.

  1. Connect

Caution: continue only if you started this connection yourself in the last few minutes. A link from the session of a different person looks the same.

Add Carrier as a connector in your assistant (claude.ai, Claude Code, Codex CLI or ChatGPT). The Carrier sign-in opens, then a consent page.

The consent page names the app. It shows the destination of the access: Verified, an app on this computer (a local app, as in this clip), or unverified. It lists what the app can do and cannot do, and the date that the connection ends. A connection lasts 30 days. Disconnect on the Account security page ends it immediately.

Enter your password again, or a code from your authenticator app, and select Allow. The app then shows that it is connected.

Sign in, read the consent page, confirm the password, Allow.
  2. Let it build a draft

The assistant received a request for a study. It made these changes:

    • It created a draft from a template, with one chamberline, Main, and one chamber, Discussion.
    • After the Welcome page of the template, it added a chat, Harbour discussion, and a social segment, Harbour feed.
    • It created an agent, Harbour host, and put it in the chamber.
    • It uploaded a picture for the post of the feed.

At the end, the assistant gives you the builder link. Harbour host is in the cast of the chamber under Communicators, as if you dragged it there. The post shows the picture, which is in the image library of the study.

An assistant can change a study before Go live: a draft, or an active or paused study in testing mode. Before Go live, it can also start, pause and resume a study. A study that it creates starts in testing mode.

Some settings are only in the builder:

    • All participant redirects. These are the completion and not-matched redirect URLs and the fail redirect of an attention check. They also include the terminate redirect of face monitoring, completion-condition redirects and redirects in surveys.
    • The link of a survey to the SurveyJS service (surveyId).
    • API keys, collaborators, the token ceiling, the data collection mode, data retention and the content filter.

The assistant cannot delete a study or select Go live. It cannot see participants or exports.

An image can be 5 MB or less (JPEG, PNG, GIF or WebP). Each connection has daily limits. A study can have 300 images or 500 MB at most.

The draft of the assistant: Welcome, Harbour discussion, Harbour feed, Harbour host in the cast, and the uploaded picture on the post.
  3. What History keeps

History is in the ⋯ menu of the builder. It keeps one revision before each working session of an assistant. A session ends after 15 minutes with no activity.

The label of the revision shows AI assistant, the name of the app and how the app was verified. In this clip, it is "on this computer". Image uploads make no History entry.

Restore writes that design back as a new revision. Thus you can go back to the design from before the assistant started, and you lose nothing. In this clip, the revision is only examined and closed.

Before Go live, examine the changes that an assistant made.

The revision from before the changes of the assistant, with Restore available.
  4. When you both edit

Each change by the assistant needs the version that it read last. Thus it cannot overwrite your edits. The opposite is also true.

In this clip, the assistant changed the name of the line to Harbour line while the builder was open. Deploy then said that the experiment was changed elsewhere since you opened it (for example by a collaborator or an AI assistant).

    To continue:

    • Reload the page. The line is now Harbour line.
    • Make your changes again.
Deploy after the rename by the assistant: changed elsewhere. The reload shows Harbour line.
  5. Disconnect the assistant

In the dashboard, open Account Settings and select Security. The Account security page opens.

Connected apps lists each app that can use your account, with its end date and its last use. Select Disconnect to end the connection immediately. The assistant must then ask you to connect it again.

Account Settings, Security, Connected apps, Disconnect. Carrier refuses the assistant immediately.
